OAAA Virtual 5KOsteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis, affecting over 32.5 million US adults. There is a common myth that being active could make your joint pain symptoms worse, but the opposite is true! The OA Action Alliance Virtual 5K was created to help you take one step forward and stay active with OA!

Frequently Asked Questions:

I have not exercised in a long time. How many weeks should I train to complete this Virtual 5K?  It typically takes 4-8 weeks of regular training to prepare for a 5K, but the most important coaching point is to listen to your body. If you are looking for a little more assistance, the Walk With Ease guidebook is designed to be completed in 6 weeks. Once this program has been completed, we hope you feel physically- and mentally-prepared enough to take part in this Virtual 5K. If you have concerns about your ability to participate, please check with your healthcare professional.

Do I have to run during this Virtual 5K?  No! You are welcome to walk, jog, run, or any combination of the three to complete this event.

How long is a 5K?  3.1 miles.

Why did the OA Action Alliance create this Virtual 5K?  Many individuals who are starting a new exercise program need a tangible goal. 5K events can be found all around the country, but they can be intimidating to those not used to regular exercise. The OA Action Alliance Virtual 5K allows you to train at your own pace over the Summer months and complete the event once you feel ready to take on the challenge.

How will my registration fee and donation be used?  The OA Action Alliance is committed to addressing OA as a national health priority and promoting effective policy solutions that aim to address the individual and national toll of OA. OA is the most common form of arthritis, and your gift will assist elevating it to a national health priority. With your support, we can continue to ensure that all people with OA have the access, skills, and capacity to benefit from effective and proven interventions. In lieu of a race tee shirt or metal, all proceeds will be donated to our organization through the Medical Foundation of North Carolina.

Where should I complete the Virtual 5K when I am ready to complete the event?  You are invited to complete the event on a track, treadmill, sidewalk, or anywhere else you can safely keep track of your distance.

When is the last date to register for the Virtual 5K?  Registration opens May 1 and will stay open until July 31.
