StandUp Tip

Pack shoes with thick soles and enough room for your toes. Wearing the right shoes can reduce the shock through your knees as you walk.

Summer Travel Tips for Adults with OA

6 summer travel tips to help protect your backWith the whole month of August before us, there is still plenty of time to enjoy a summer vacation before the changing of the seasons. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis (OA) can significantly impact your travel plans. One of the signs of OA is several minutes of stiffness in a joint after sitting for a long time, such as in a car or plane seat. If you are worried that your travel plans will result in swelling or tenderness in your hands, knees, feet, neck, hips, or spine, follow a few summer travel tips for adults with arthritis:

HandsWear compression gloves while driving or add a steering wheel cover.

KneesOrganize your medications in a way which they are easily accessible.

Feet: Wear shoes that are easy to take on and off when going through airport security.

Neck: Pack a neck pillow for the flight, drive, or hotel stay.

HipsAdjust your car seat to open up the hips and allow for the muscles to lengthen.

Spine: Review this inforgraphic created by OAAA member organization, National Spine Health Foundation, for tips to help protect your back.

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.
