Spearheaded by the Arthritis Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and managed by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the OA Action Alliance is a coalition uniting stakeholders in arthritis, aging, public health, women’s and minority health, chronic disease prevention, physical activity, injury prevention, weight management and consumer affairs to change behaviors, improve awareness and promote positive policy change around the growing epidemic of osteoarthritis (OA). We need your participation to have the greatest impact.
As the first coalition uniting all OA constituencies, the newly formed OA Action Alliance has come together at a critical time. Today, OA affects more than 32.5 million adults in the US and nearly 4% of the population worldwide. OA costs the US health care system more than $22.6 billion annually in hospital costs alone. The true cost, in both financial and human terms, is much larger. OA is now the leading cause of disability in the US. Even more alarmingly, OA rates are expected to increase dramatically in the near future as baby boomers age and Americans become increasingly overweight and obese. Yet OA is not inevitable or untreatable. Prevention, delay or reduced impact is possible, relief is available, and more promising treatments are on the horizon.
