    Halloween is right around the corner and osteoarthritis (OA) has been allowed to lurk in the shadows for far too long. Fortunately, the OA Action Alliance is here to make OA a little less frightening for those diagnosed with the disease, their caregivers, and healthcare providers. Our coalition is guided by the vision, goals, and guiding principles set forth by the National Public Health Agenda for Osteoarthritis: 2020 Update.

    Active Aging Week

    Initiated in 2003 by the International Council on Active Aging, Active Aging Week (Oct 5-11, 2020) seeks to call attention to and wholeheartedly celebrate the positivity of aging today. While the risk of developing osteoarthritis (OA) increases with age, OA is not an inevitable part of aging. Evidence shows that injury prevention and weight loss can prevent the onset of OA, and weight loss or maintenance, physical activity, and self-management education can reduce the symptoms and progression of OA at any age.

    COVID-19 has changed a lot of things, but one has stayed the same: Falling is NOT a normal part of aging. Did you know people with osteoarthritis are at higher risk for falls and fall-related injuries? Join the National Council on Aging this week in a nationwide effort to raise awareness about preventing falls.

    September 2020 marks the 5th Annual Rheumatic Disease Awareness Month (RDAM), a national awareness event sponsored by the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and its public awareness campaign, Simple Tasks™. RDAM was created to raise awareness of the 100+ conditions under the umbrella of rheumatic disease.

    Blue is the designated color for pain awareness. We’re encouraging everybody to participate in Pain Awareness Month by wearing blue on September 27th! Show your support by wearing blue to work (even if you are doing so remotely), taking a selfie, and tagging it with #ShowUsYourBlue and #PainAwarenessMonth.
