Beat The Heat This Summer!

As we approach the summer months and the weather gets warmer, the urge to get outside and soak up the sun feels strong. Of course, it is important to stay active to help relieve osteoarthritis (OA) pain. But, it is also important to stay safe in the heat when exercising. Simple ways to stay active every dayThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) has some great recommendations for how you can Beat the Heat, like doing outdoor activities during the coolest part of the day, drinking plenty of liquids, and trying to stay in the shade when outdoors during peak sunlight.

There are also many ways to stay active that are not so intensive. If running or biking might be too difficult to do in the hot weather, check out our page on Staying Active with OA for small changes you can make in your life to stay active every day. Some examples of small ways to keep your body moving include parking your car a bit farther when getting groceries or using an activity tracker to keep up with your progress and stay motivated. No matter what you choose, remember that building strength by staying active can help to reduce pain and stiffness from OA, and be sure to consider safe options when exercising in the heat this summer!

I lead by example. My kids know what sweat is. They’ve seen me come home from so many runs and asked, ‘What’s on your skin? How did you get it?’ And I tell them, ‘It’s from exercise!’ So now my son will come home from a bike ride, take off his helmet and say, ‘Look, Mom. I’m sweating! I just worked out!’
