Updated Physical Activity Guidelines

Being physically active is one of the most important things people can do to improve their health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently released the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines include information on how physical activity can help promote health and reduce the risk of chronic disease. New evidence supports that physical activity helps manage even more health conditions and can decrease pain for those with osteoarthritis, reduce disease progression for hypertension and type 2 diabetes, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Over time, physical activity can help you live a longer, healthier life and help you stay at a healthy weight.

We all know that physical activity is important, but it can be hard to find the time in your busy routine! The Move Your Way website includes tools, videos, and fact sheets that have tips for making it easier to get more active.

The new guidelines and the Move Your Way campaign encourage Americans that every step counts and that small changes can add up to big benefits! What counts? Even things that don’t feel like exercise can count toward your daily activity goals:

  • Yardwork or housework
  • Walking your dog
  • Gardening
  • Playing catch with your kids
  • Dance party

What’s your favorite way to move?
