Monthly Member Spotlight:

Did you know that individuals with a history of knee injury are 3-6 times more likely to develop knee osteoarthritis later in life? Youth who participate in running and jumping sports such as soccer, football, and basketball have an increased risk of major lower limb injuries. Participation in sports is on the rise among youth athletes, and knee injuries such as a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or meniscus are now seen with greater frequency in children and teens. That’s why it’s so important to equip youth athletes with the knowledge and training to keep their joints healthy while being active.

We appreciate organizations like Triangle Multisport that focus on coaching and training athletes with injury prevention in mind. Triangle Multisport has helped us explore avenues for educating coaches and athletes in local communities about the importance of training strategies to minimize joint injury as a means of reducing the risk of developing OA later in life. We are grateful for the insight that Triangle Multisport provides on our Injury Prevention task group and look forward to expanding that effort in the near future.

An Interview with Dave and Monette Williams and Triangle Multisport

David and Monette Williams are co-owners of Triangle Multisport

1. What is your organization’s interest in the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance?

We at Triangle Multisport pride ourselves with working with clients to achieve their goals whether they are 6 years old or 90+ years old and whether they are new to exercise or professional athletes. As exercise physiologists, trainers, and coaches, we believe it is our duty to provide a fun, safe, and effective platform in order to allow our clients to optimize their potential. A large part of that is staying up to date on current research and evolving best-practices. The Osteoarthritis Action Alliance has played an essential part in this process and has helped give us the tools to both better educate and train clients that are battling osteoarthritis. Clients also appreciate having a reliable resource that addresses their concerns and provides scientifically-based tips, treatments, and general information.

2. What do you think is the most important issue today related to osteoarthritis?

We feel that educating people with osteoarthritis about the importance of exercise is perhaps the most important issue right now. While, historically, many active people stop exercising because of pain and discomfort related to osteoarthritis, we stress the facts that appropriate exercise can provide some relief and allow one to more fully enjoy daily activities they would otherwise struggle with, resulting in an overall longer and better quality of life. In addition, we feel it important to educate athletes who have been injured about the importance of proper recovery and therapy as steps in learning how to prevent further injuries that can result in an earlier onset of osteoarthritis.

3. How does your work connect to issues in osteoarthritis?

Through the various aspects of what we do at Triangle Multisport, we really connect to many issues relating to osteoarthritis. As mentioned above, we train many younger and non-symptomatic clients and athletes to whom we educate about and enforce preventative measures and a healthy lifestyle. This can help avoid the occurrence of osteoarthritis or manage it better if/when symptoms do begin to develop. At the same time, we do also work with clients who are currently suffering from osteoarthritis. These range the gamut from younger elite athletes to more senior individuals. With all of our clients, including those with or at risk of getting osteoarthritis, we stress proper technique, injury prevention and recovery, and a healthy active lifestyle whether they are training for performance or general health reasons.

4. What is a headline you’d like to see about osteoarthritis in five years?

A combination of exercise and new non-invasive medical treatment allows those with osteoarthritis to maintain optimal full range of motion and strength with minimal pain.

5. What is one interesting fact you’d like people to know about your organization?

Through almost twenty years, Triangle Multisport has partnered with numerous local businesses, non-profits, and a large network of health professionals to provide opportunities for every level of an athlete while trying to stay engaged with our community and promote many great initiatives.
