Monthly Member Spotlight:

American College of Sports Medicine

Did you know individuals with a knee injury are 3-6x more likely than those without knee injury to develop knee osteoarthritis (OA)? Injury prevention is one of the most critical ways to reduce OA incidence, which is why we’re so proud to partner with organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). ACSM is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world, dedicated to advancing scientific research and promoting evidence-based strategies in these fields.

With the American College of Sports Medicine and National Athletic Trainers Association annual meetings occuring in June, it was the perfect time to release our new infographicOsteoarthritis: staying in the game is a ‘joint’ effort. You can view and engage with our conference experiences through our twitter moments at ACSM and NATA.

An Interview with Lindsay DiStefano and the ACSM

Lindsay DiStefano, PhD, ATC, is an
Associate Professor in the Department
of Kinesiology at the University of
Connecticut and member of the ACSM.
She is also an active member of the
OAAA’s injury prevention work group.

1.  What is your organization’s interest in the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance (OAAA)?

ACSM is focused on advancing and integrating scientific research to promote physical activity and optimize health. With this mission in mind, ACSM has a strong interest and alignment with the OAAA through mutual efforts to promote a lifetime of safe physical activity by preventing and effectively managing osteoarthritis.

2.  What do you think is the most important issue today related to osteoarthritis?

Understanding how to prevent osteoarthritis, which includes primary prevention of musculoskeletal injury and improving outcomes after initial joint injury.

3. How does your organization’s work connect to issues in osteoarthritis?

My work is directly focused on disseminating preventive training programs to youth athletes to prevent primary musculoskeletal injuries to optimize long-term joint health. We are working to improve dissemination and implementation strategies to change the culture of sport to include preventive training programs as a regular aspect of sport participation. We are also integrating these efforts into schools in order to encourage safe physical activity participation for all children.

4. What is a headline you’d like to see about osteoarthritis in five years?

The majority of high school athletes in the United States are performing preventive training programs to prevent primary joint injury

5. What is one interesting fact you’d like people to know about your organization?

ACSM takes a multidisciplinary approach to exercise science and sports medicine by incorporating views from exercise scientists, athletic trainers, physicians, physical therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, and other professionals related to exercise and medicine.

ACSM offers a variety of prestigious travel, tuition, and leadership awards as well as research grants for eligible members.

Exercise is Medicine

The Exercise is Medicine Campaign (EIM), managed by the ACSM, is an initiative designed to encourage health professionals to include exercise in treatment plans. By compiling the evidence on the effectiveness of exercise as medical treatment, bringing together a network of advocates, and providing resources to assist healthcare providers, exercise professionals and the community in their efforts to promote exercise, EIM is helping more patients access this simple, effective, and readily available form of treatment.
